From Kermit Lee Mayberry

Hi, Niece ,

I have made the acquaintance of Fay Taylor, of Kernersville, NC. She, and you & I are descendants of John Clay Alderson, husband of Martha Ann Chaney.
John C Alderson was father to Cora E. Alderson. Cora’s daughter, Inez, was my mother.  John C Alderson (of Laurel Grove), served in the Civil War, in the 38th Virginia Infantry ( Pittsylvania Regiment) as a Pvt. In Co C. He was surrendered and paroled, April 9, 1865 at
Appomattox Court House, VA.
by General Robert E. Lee, to Lieut, Gen. U. S. Grant.
Now the story is that John was a large, intimating fellow and one night while walking home in Laurel Grove, he was shot and killed. Martha Ann Chaney was left a widow with several children. She moved to Danville, and lived on a Civil War widows pension. It sounds like pretty hard times; maybe that’s why my grandmother, Cora, was so hard. Being raised up in all that.
Based on the above, we qualify to join the Daughters/Sons of the Confederacy. How would that be accepted now?
Now Martha Ann Chaney, born July 10, 1850- died Jan. 17, 1934, was daughter of Anderson Chaney, Born 1815- died Oct. 15, 1875.
Anderson Chaney was the son of Abraham Chaney Born Circa 1760?- died Dec. 25, 1848.
(Abraham served in the Revolutionary War, for three tours as a Pvt.)
His father was Jacob Chaney, died Sept. 24, 1801.
His father was Charles Chaney.
His father was Richard.
This is all pretty impressive. I had no idea, and they were all from Pittsylvania Co. (Formally, Halifax County)
There is more on other sides of the Family, but I have to get it straight in my mind, before I can tell it intelligently. Somewhere back there; our ancestors owned LARGE amounts of property, land, slaves, had position in the community, etc.
I think this is interesting. Just knowing this stuff. Thought you would enjoy it to.
